Panache Rag Quilt

Finally!!! A sewing project! I just finished this rag quilt. I LOVE it! I have wanted to make a rag quilt for as long as I can remember, but I didn't make one because I couldn't figure out what fabric I wanted. I'm too left-brained to just throw random fabrics together...they would all have to match. Last August I was in my favorite fabric store, Material Girls, and saw the Panache line by Moda, designed by Sanae. As soon as I saw it, I knew that's what I wanted. I love this line! The colors are exactly my taste. All the fabrics in this line are gorgeous! I had a hard time narrowing it down to 13. The whole line is simply beautiful. Even though I bought the fabric 5 months ago, I didn't start working on it until a little over a week ago. I'm so glad I finally finished it. Here's the top view. Then the bottom. So snuggly and warm. I didn't take pictures throughout making it, so I don't have a tutorial, but here are a couple of great ones:

Crib Bedding

I'm still here! We had a wonderful (and very busy) holiday season, then all three kids got hit with sickness (at different times of course), so I'm sorry I've been MIA. I haven't been sewing as much lately. However, I did get the pictures of the crib bedding I made. Here's how it turned out. The baby blanket is backed with minky just like all my other baby blankets. I'm really pleased with how it turned out, and mommy (and daddy) both really loved it and are excited for their little one to start using it. These pictures really don't do it justice, but you get some idea. Here is the bedskirt. I used this tutorial, however, I didn't really use it much because the bed skirt was simply measure, hem, gather, stitch. I serged my seams as well even though the tutorial didn't say so, simply because I love that clean, finished look. From the same site, I used this tutorial for the crib bumper. The bumper pads came with instructions, but I liked the online tutorial better because it added the piping along the top, which I think makes it look so much better. Here's the inside view: Then the outside: It was a very fun project to work on! If anyone wants their own custom crib bedding, let me know and I would be happy to make it for you!

Recipe Review #43: Yummy Stuff Dessert

A couple of week's ago at a little get-together, my neighbor brought this delicious dessert. I had to get the recipe. She calls it "Yummy Stuff" and it is just that!
Yummy Stuff Dessert
1 1/2 sticks of butter/margarine, softened
1 1/4 cups chopped pecans
1 1/2 cups flour
8 oz. cream cheese, softened
1 regular-sized tub Cool Whip
1 cup powdered sugar
3 cups milk
1 small pkg instant vanilla pudding
1 small pkg instant chocolate pudding

1. Mix butter, 3/4 cup pecans, and flour. Press into ungreased 9x13 pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Cool in fridge/freezer.
2. Mix cream cheese, 1 cup Cool Whip, and powdered sugar. Spread on cooled crust and place in fridge.
3. Meanwhile beat milk and both pudding packages for 2 minutes. Pour over cream cheese layer and put in fridge to set.
4. Once pudding layer is set, top with remaining Cool Whip and nuts. Keep in fridge until ready to serve.

Recipe Review #40: Chocolate Eclair Cake

Chocolate Eclair Cake
1 cup flour
1 stick butter or margarine
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup water
4 eggs (best at room temp)
2 small pkg instant French Vanilla pudding
2 1/2 cups cold milk
8 oz. softened cream cheese
12 oz. Cool Whip
3 oz. chocolate chips (1/2 cup)
2 T. butter or margarine
1 cup powdered sugar
3-4 T. milk

Bring water and butter to a boil until all the butter is melted. All at once, add flour and salt. Beat until mixture forms a ball that leaves the sides of the saucepan. Cool slightly. Add eggs one at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition. Spread pastry mixture into an ungreased jelly roll pan. Bake at 400 degrees for 25-35 minutes. Remove from oven and pierce bubbles with a fork while hot. Cool completely.

Mix instant pudding with milk. Add softened cream cheese. Beat together thoroughly. Spread on cake. Spread whipped topping over pudding mixture.

Melt chocolate chips and butter over low heat in saucepan. Add powdered sugar and milk. Alternate until thin glaze forms. Drizzle chocolate glaze over whipped topping. Refrigerate at least 1 hour or longer before serving.

Recipe Review #37: Peanut Butter Rolo Cookies

Remodelaholic had a cookie recipe on her site the other day that I had to try it for myself - Peanut Butter Rolo Cookies. They are delicious!!! I managed to hold off eating all of them the day I made them, and have to agree that they taste better when they are about a day or two old. You really get more of the caramel taste when they are completely cooled, but if you can't wait that long, they are very tasty fresh out of the oven as well! Grab the recipe here and enjoy!

Recipe Review #36: Flautas

I got this recipe for homemade flautas from my mother-in-law. It is a tradition to serve them at our Christmas Eve Mexican feast. Like I said before, we love Mexican food, so this is one of my favorite traditions!!!

Flautas
1. Cook a roast overnight with onion, salt, and pepper. Shred
2. Add sliced green onions, diced celery, minced garlic, and shredded cheese. Add as much of each to your taste and also depending on the size of roast you cooked.
3. Warm a stack of corn tortillas in a tortilla warmer in the microwave for about 90 seconds.
4. Place about 2 T. of meat mixture in tortilla and roll up. Secure with a toothpick.
5. You can either cook them in oil at this point in a deep skillet or bake them at 425 degrees for 15-20 minutes.
6. Serve with guacamole, sour cream, and salsa!

Recipe Review #35: Navajo Tacos

One of my favorite meals is Navajo Tacos. Here's my recipe:

Navajo Meat Mixture
1 lb. ground beef or turkey
1/2 cup pinto beans, cooked and ground (1 15 oz. can)
1 T. onion, chopped
2 cup picante sauce
3/4 cup tomato sauce (1 8 oz. can)
1/4 tsp. chili powder
1/4 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. paprika
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/2 tsp. salt

Brown hamburger. Drain fat. Add remaining ingredients and heat through. Serve over scones and top with shredded cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, olives, onions, salsa, and sour cream. Enjoy!!

Recipe Review #34: Scones

I love scones! They are delicious for Navajo Tacos, or as a dessert! Here's my recipe:

Scones
¼ cup warm water
1 T. yeast
¼ cup shortening
1 ¼ cup milk
1 egg
¼ cup sugar
2 tsp. salt
4 cups flour

Dissolve yeast in water. Let grow. Melt shortening in milk. Let cool until warm. Add milk mixture, sugar, salt, and egg. Add flour. Knead. Let rise until double in size, or about an hour. Cut up into pieces, roll out flat, and deep fry.

We love them with honey butter: Or powdered sugar:

Recipe Review #32: Mint Brownies

I love mint! So when I saw these Mint Brownies on Our Best Bites, I had to try them out: DELISH!!! I might even double the mint layer next time. Try it out for yourself. Grab the recipe here.

Recipe Review #31: Honey Lime Chicken Enchiladas

Found a new cooking blog called, The Girl Who Ate Everything, and tried the recipe for Honey Lime Chicken Enchiladas. Loved the lime flavoring!!! Will definitely be adding this to the regular meal plan!
