Yesterday my second daughter celebrated her 4th birthday! She wanted a "Rainbow" party, so here is the cake I made for her.

Let's take a peek at the inside.

This was the second fondant cake I've ever made so I know it's FAR from perfect. I used two yellow cake mixes since I only have three 9" round cake pans, therefore, each cake mix made 3 of the 6 layers. I colored the cake layers and the fondant with Wilton's icing gels. I messed up a little on the fondant recipe so the white cracked in some places. I figured out if I warmed the fondant in the microwave for a bit to soften it, I could avoid the cracking so the colors turned out fine.
I learned a lot, though, so I'm pretty sure if I make a third sometime, it will turn out better. All that matters is my daughter thought it was cool and had a great "Rainbow" birthday!

ReplyDeleteI love this! My baby turns 2 this Friday, and I was going to do a rainbow theme for her (since we live in the Rainbow state). This may be a little too ambitious for me, though! It looks amazing! Do you have a link for the fondant recipe? I've never worked with fondant before...I'm kind of scared. ;)
ReplyDeleteAloha,
charlie
That is AWESOME!!! Did she know the inside was colored beforehand? That would've been SO cool if she didn't...it would be like magic!
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone!
ReplyDeleteBrianne-
I did not flavor the cake - although that might be a good idea. I used a yellow cake mixes and just dyed them.

That would have been cool, but she was "helping" me step-by-step. My girls love being in the kitchen with me and I love having them there!
Wow, that is pretty impressive, my poor kids never got anything quite that creative.
