July Jamboree Guest Post: Windproof Tablecloth by Kara of Creations by Kara

July-Jamboree
Hello Sew Cute Friends! I'm Kara from Creations by Kara, and I'm so happy to be here today. I just met Tam and her darling little Ryker a few weeks ago, and she is just as amazing in real life as she is online. :)
Hasn't this been a fun month? There have been so many cute ideas shared, and I've found a few new amazing blogs! :)

My boys love picnics. Who doesn't, right? Food just seems to taste better when you eat it outside in the fresh air. But you know what I don't like about eating outside? (I mean besides the stinkin' hornets!) I hate it when you put your tablecloth on the table and the wind blows it all over the place. So darn annoying.

Today I'm going to show you how to make a tablecloth with weighted corners. No more tablecloths flapping in the wind. Woohoo!
1-First up you need to prep your tablecloth material. (I like to wash and dry mine first.) I picked a neutral color so I could use it for any occasion, but there are so many fun fabrics you can choose! Measure your table first, then buy the amount of fabric you need. I made mine with about 8" of fabric hanging over the edge of each side.

Going around all four edges of your fabric, fold over about 1/4" and iron a crease.
2-Then fold over again, and iron the crease really well.
Set your tablecloth aside while you work on the weighted corners.

3-Cut 2 pieces of fabric that are 6"x 6".
4-Cut them in half diagonally so you have 4 triangles.
5-Fold the edge of one triangle down 1/4", and iron it well.
6-Now fold it over another 1/4" and iron the crease.
7-See how the corners are all wonky now? Not good. Cut off the overlapping edges of the folded down corners, so you have an even triangle.
8-Now stitch the folded edge down using a straight stitch.
9-Repeat steps 5 thru 8 for the remaining three triangle pieces.

10-Now it's time to put the corners in place. Tuck them underneath your folded edges with the smooth side up. Make sure they are all the way to the edge so that when you sew the hem edges, you will catch the triangle pieces underneath. Pin in place. And yes, if you are using a thick fabric like canvas, it is hard to get the pin into that corner. But do it anyway. ;)
11-After all four corner pieces are pinned in place, it's time to sew. I like to make my stitches as close to the inside folded edge as I can. And no, my stitching isn't perfect. It's OK. No one can see this side when you're all done.
12-Now you have four corners that you can weigh down in the event of wind. Which in Utah seems to be every picnic we ever have. I used washers, but if you are picnicking in the boonies and don't have washers, rocks will work just swell.

13-There you have it. A picnic tablecloth that stays in place even if it's breezy outside. Notice that I said breezy. If you get hurricane winds like we do sometimes, I make no guarantees that your tablecloth (and all your food for that matter) won't end up in Timbuktu.
And because I know some of you are going to notice--yes, there are wrinkles. I did iron my tablecloth. But someone else who was a little less than careful put it away. I didn't want to take the time to iron it again just for the photo. I love you guys, but not that much. ;)

July Jamboree Guest Post: Burlap Christmas Wreath by Brooke of All Things Thrifty

July-Jamboree
Hi Sew Dang Cute Readers!!!! I am Brooke from All Things Thrifty!
I am so excited that Tam asked me to come visit today! I love Tam's site and her projects are "SEW" adorable! :)

Today I'm going to jump ahead a few months and prepare you for the holidays. I'm one of those people that RARELY think ahead (I wish I was), and I'm kind of proud of myself for doing this project a few months in advance! (I can't take full credit though, I am the Relief Society Activities director in my church group, so the wreath is part of a "Get ready for the Holidays" activity that I'm involved in.)

The inspiration for this wreath came from a Patriotic version that I saw from The Scrap Shoppe. I just decided to turn it into a red, white and green wreath for Christmas. I thought it would look sort of like a candy cane with the red and white stripes. :)

List of supplies needed:
One 12" Straw Wreath (Mine cost $2.99 at Michaels) (DO NOT get a Styrofoam wreath...if you drop it, it will shatter...take my advice, you do NOT want to spend hours and hours making a wreath for it to be ruined in 1.2 seconds...yes, I am speaking from experience here).
1/2 yard of white burlap I bought the burlap at JoAnn's for $2.99/yard.
1/2 yard of red burlap YES, you can buy red burlap. JoAnn's sells it for the same price as white. (TIP: If you don't live in an area that sells red burlap, you can spray paint it to be whatever color you want.)
An Olfa Cutting Board and Roller Knife
Crochet Thread
A long needle
Hot Glue Gun (preferably one that has a "medium" setting so you don't burn your fingers.)
Hot Glue Sticks
Ribbon of your choice.

Step 1: Take your burlap and cut it into 2" strips. Be prepared, the burlap will get ALL OVER YOU. So, wear something that can be covered in lots of gunk.

I used 12 strips of white burlap and 12 strips of red. I think maybe 14 of each would have worked a tad better, but I had a hard time the first time I started gluing because I put them too close together. It was too ruffly, and it looked TERRIBLE. So, I ripped them all off and started again. I wanted the white and red to look like a candy cane, and if the ruffles were too close together, it looked really bad.
Step 2. Take the Crochet Thread and make a large stitch about 1/2 an inch in along one side of each strip of burlap. I used my long needle because it was much faster than using a small one, AND I couldn't get the thread into a small needle anyway. MAKE SURE that you don't do it too close to the edge. The burlap is going to flake off like crazy and you need the stitch in far enough to make the ruffle.
Step 3: Make the ruffle by pulling the burlap to one side and carefully knot the ends of your crochet thread to hold it. Don't make it too ruffly, I'm telling ya, too much ruffles make it look BIG-TIME BAD.

Step 4: Start at one spot and begin gluing, glue one stripe at a time, and cut the excess burlap off the back and hot glue it into place. Make sure to glue them straight and continue gluing around the wreath. See the illustration below for a few more tips:

Step 5: Put on a green bow, and voila you are done!!

I love the texture of the wreath, and the burlap flaking off is my favorite part.

I wish I would have used red crochet thread to make the red ruffles since you can see the white thread if you look closely, but oh well.
I thought this Christmas wreath turned out very cute and unique!
Thank you Tam for having me over here at your adorable blog.
xoxo,
Brooke from All Things Thrifty!

July Jamboree Guest Post: Watermelon Toenails by Michelle of A Little Tipsy

July-Jamboree
Michelle here, from A Little Tipsy.
I am totally immersed in summer and have a fun little pedi to share with you today. I saw this on one of the teens at church and about died it was so cute. I had a 14 year old niece coming out to visit and knew this would be such a fun project for us. Introducing...

Watermelon Toenails

Don't they just scream summer?!

Supplies:
  • Coral, bright pink or red nail polish
  • Green nail polish
  • French manicure nail stickers
  • Black acrylic paint
  • Toothpick
  • Clear nail polish

1. Paint pink/red base coat. Allow to dry.

2. Tape off the tips with the french manicure stickers.

3. Paint tips green.

4. Remove tape strips. Either take them off when the paint is really fresh or after it has dried for a long time, otherwise it will make the edges furry.

5. Use a toothpick to add a black dot in the middle of your nail. Use the opposite tip to drag the dot to a point making a teardrop shape. Repeat putting three "seeds" on each toenail. I did not do seeds on my pinky toenails because they are tiny.

6. Cover with a clear coat to add shine and protection.

Put on some sandals and enjoy your cute watermelon toenails!

I have a lot more fun tutorials. Stop in any time! Thanks Tam for letting me visit!
P.S. Don't forget to sign up for free Tipsy updates via RSS or email.
