Barn Doors Train Bedrom: Guest Post {AKA Design}

Today is the last day to link up YOUR Round 4: Home Décor project! Prizes will be given to the top 3 viewed links. GO HERE to enter yours. Linky party open until Saturday, October 29th @ 6 pm MST.

Our second runner-up this Season was Shannon & Dean {AKA Design} with their Barn Doors Train Bedroom.

Those Barn Doors immediately caught my eye, and the train table underneath is AWESOME!!!

Let’s here from Shannon & Dean how this room came together.

We so cannot believe that Crafting With The Stars is over! What a fun time! And a TON of work. But boy did we get some great projects done for the house! Thank you, Tam and to all of you who participated in the voting! :) This was definitely an experience.

For the fourth and final round we turned our attention to our son's room...it was the one room in our house that hadn't been featured on our blog...mainly because we hadn't given it much attention in the (almost) two years we've lived in this house. After we emptied it for the makeover, this is what it looked like:

And this is what our hallway looked like:

Yikes!

Let's get back to the room, shall we? Most parts of this makeover are pretty straightforward, so I have to apologize that there's not too much of an actual tutorial. But I will give a run through for each part with all the details where possible.

The Walls
We painted with paint we had on hand that conveniently lent itself to the color scheme we were going for. Yay for happy coincidences! The colous are Behr Antique White and Behr Stepping Stones. I first cut in with a Purdy brush and then filled in the rest. No taping necessary - easy-peasy!

______________________________________________

The Bed
We turned the bed and centered it on the end wall to make it more like a day bed. Dean also raised the bed with some off-cut 4x4's (screwed securely to the frame underneath) to make it high enough to leave room for the rolling train board. We covered an existing duvet with a new duvet cover from Ikea and added some pillows to plush up the space for lounging.

______________________________________________

The Side Tables
We used pvc pipe and caps attached to some stained pine shelving pieces to "build-in" the bed. The size of the tables was cut to fill the space evenly on either side of the bed.

______________________________________________

Artwork
The large mounted train plaque came from Dean's Mom and Dad, and the framed art is old public library materials (they removed it from their resources and gave it away). The heavy black metal hooks came from the dollar store (how cool are they?) and the lanterns are, of course, from Ikea. :) I hand painted the Railroad Crossing Sign between the doors onto two scrap pieces of wood that I wood-glued together.

______________________________________________

Rolling Train Board
Remember our dining room table makeover? Well the old table top found a new home as Jonah's rolling train board (more upcycling). By attaching some casters to the bottom of each of the four corners, we can now roll his carefully planned and laid out trains and tracks out of the way at night! (Stepping on those things hurts almost as much as stepping on Lego. Come on, you know what I'm talking about - OUCH!)

______________________________________________

Barn Doors
Now the bad news is I must tell you that Dean made the rails and hardware for the barn doors - and I can't give you a tutorial on that. I'm sorry. He works in metal fabrication, so he made them on his own time at work. If you do a google search for Barn Door Hardware you can find quite a few suppliers. BUT I can tell you that he made the barn doors from super cheap PLYWOOD and some leftover wood. Yup, plywood! He just cut each piece to fit the height and width we wanted and added some large Z's with scrap wood. I stained it with a couple of foam brushes (um, because the plywood sort of chewed up the foam - oops!) and some Minwax Dark Walnut stain.

______________________________________________

We still have the rest of the room to finish: some more custom train artwork (I'm thinking an old fashioned chalkboard train schedule), some shelves for books, and a wall with maps and clocks. But until then, we have a really happy little boy!!

We hope you've enjoyed our projects and will come to visit us at {aka}|design!

xo,

Shannon & Dean

I am so happy to hear those barn doors were made (and not an incredible find), because that means I can make them, too!!! Party smile

What’s so amazing about Shannon & Dean throughout this competition is they did all of their outstanding projects while also hosting Thanksgiving (Canada), and getting ready for a TV appearance (Steven & Chris show airing this Wednesday). All of that AND they made the top 3 EVERY.SINGLE.ROUND!!!

Congrats guys!

I highly recommend following along with AKA Design so you can see more of their remarkable work!

Vintage Superhero Bunkroom: Guest Post {Corner House}

Two more days to link up YOUR Round 4: Home Décor project! Prizes will be given to the top 3 viewed links. GO HERE to enter yours. Linky party open until Saturday, October 29th @ 6 pm MST.

Our first runner-up this Season was Laura {Corner House} with her Vintage Superhero Bunkroom.

Didn’t you just LOVE it?! Wow, her son is one lucky boy. That bed is HUGE and I love the paint chip wall and the framed superhero art. So fun!!!

Take it away Laura to tell us how you made this incredible room.

Oh wow, I can't believe this crazy ride is over.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all those who voted.  Even if you didn't vote for me.  I was talking to a friend of mine last night and she realized that she had voted for Jess and Monica's pallet wall instead of my bunk bed and I said "It's okay I probably would have voted for theirs too. :)"  But really this was such a crazy journey to go on and I have learned so much.

Creating a bunk wall was something I have been wanting to do in my boys' room for quite a while and when the final week of competition fell on the same week as one of my boy's birthdays, I knew I had to make him a new bed.  I had promised him a while ago I would make him a yellow bed when he was finally potty trained and he had been potty trained for a while now.

I started by looking at plans for beds on Knock off Wood and decided that I really liked the look of the simple bed.  So I turned it into a bunk wall unit.

Building this unit took a LOT of wood.

Shopping List:
14 - 1x6 boards 8' length
12 - 1x4 boards 8' length
  9 - 2x4 boards 8' length
12 - 2x2 boards 8' length
  8 - 2x6 boards 8' length

liquid nails
wood filler
sandpaper
1 1/4 " nails
2" nails
2 1/2" screws
4" screws  (48)

Tools:
Measuring Tape
safety glasses
drill
saw
hammer

Cut list:
20 - 1x6 cut to 38 1/2" (headers)
86 - 1x6 cut to 2 1/2" (spacers)
36 - 1x4 cut to 30 1/2" (headboard rails)
12 - 2x4 cut to 42" (headboard posts)
  6 - 2x4 cut to 48" (top of headboard)

for the frame
  8 - 2x2 cut to 75 1/2"
  8 - 2x2 cut to 35 1/2"
  8 - 2x6 cut to 74"

Wow that was a lot of cutting.  Are you still with me?  So basically you are making 6 headboards and 4 bed frames.

Let's start with the headboards shall we?  To make the headboard, lay down two 1x6 headers.  Then lay down the spacers and rails alternating across the two headers.  (It's actually more fun than it sounds)

Nail those bad boys in with the 1 1/4" nails.  If you are lucky enough to have a nail gun I would use it.  I have a hammer so I used that... on all 6 headboards.

Then add some liquid nails and sandwich the spacers and rails with two more 1x6 headers.  This time use 2" nails to make it nice and strong.

Next you are going to add your 2x4 posts.  You are going to need to pre-drill holes in the post and then drill 4' screws through the posts into the top and bottom of the header.  Use 2 screws for the top and 2 for the bottom.  That is 4 screws per post.

Now, to make the bed fit nicely on the wall, I placed the panel to the back edge of the post for the headboards at the head of the beds.  I centered the panels on the posts for the center headers and I placed them on the outer edge for the other end of the bed.  Got that?

Now don't put the 2x4 tops on the headboards for the bottom level headboards yet.  You will want to use 2 1/2" screws to screw the tops onto the tops of the upper level headboards and screw the tops for the bottom level headboards onto the bottom of the upper level headboards.  I used 4 screws per headboard.  At this point I also did a little sanding where needed and filled in any seams I felt were not pretty.

Now I took the headers and my cut pieces for my frame into the room to assemble it all.  I started by using 3 inch screws to screw the 35 1/2" 2x2 into the headers.  (Use a lot of them).  Then I used 2 1/2" screws to screw the 75 1/2" 2x2 into the outer edge of the 35 1/2" 2x2s.  This really is an exciting part because they FINALLY start to look like a bed and not just a whole lot of pieces of wood.  Next you want to put on your 2x6 siderails. (you can see one on the bed in the left in the picture above.)  Screw through the 2x2 into the 2x6 with the 2 1/2"screws about every foot.  You want these to be nice and strong.

Now add on the upper level.  You can see in this picture how I put the headboard tops on the top and bottom of the upper level headboards.  I used 4 screws (alternating the angle of the screw) to screw on the upper level headboards.  The frames build in just like the lower level.

Then, all you have to do is fill in any spots with your wood filler, sand and paint and sand and paint.

And then stand back and be all like... "Yeah, I built that all by myself."  Only may I suggest not building this by yourself.  You have to do some pretty tricky maneuvers to hold those boards in place while screwing them in.

I actually still have a TON to do in the room (like ladders, safety rails, cool shelves, a desk, curtains, train table), but the bunk-wall was a BIG part of that and it is very nice to have my sweet little boy no longer sleeping in an old little toddler bed.

Um….were the rest of you reading that with your jaw dropped, thinking “How the crap did she pull that off?” Wow! Wow! Wow! That was a ton of work, but the end result is so incredible!

Congratulations Laura! All of your projects this season were spectacular!!!

Be sure to follow along with Corner House so don’t miss out on any of her awesome stuff!

Pallet Possibilities (Pallet Wall) Guest Post: Real Housewives of BC

Have you linked up YOUR Round 4: Home Décor project? Prizes will be given to the top 3 viewed links. GO HERE to enter yours. Linky party open until Saturday, October 29th @ 6 pm MST.

By now you should be well familiar with Jess & Monica {
Real Housewives of BC} and their remarkable projects. Their Pallet Possibilities – Pallet Wall Bedroom really took the cake this final round and won them the title of Season 3 Champion!

Are you all dying to know how it was done?

Well here they are to share that tutorial with us.

First of all, we want to give a huge shout out to everyone that voted during this whole competition! Thank you so much! We've had a blast during this competition and appreciate all of Tam's hard work.
**********************************************************************************
Pallet Possibilities-Pallet Wall
We finished round four with a pretty awesome project that we'd been wanting to get working on in my (Monica's) house for months.  When the hubs and I moved into our house 12 months ago (holy moly it's been 1 year already!) we decorated 3 out of 4 kid's bedrooms.  I wanted to wait until the little man was out of his crib and into a "big boy bed" before tackling the room.
Well, the crib is history and we were ready to make this tiny space small, but mighty!
Jess and I have a thing for pallets.  We've written a Pallet Possibilities post and Jess shared a pallet shelves post.  Well, this time we thought we'd take it to the next level and do an entire wall of pallet wood!
Here's how we did it: (Shhh... don't tell, but this was super easy and the wood was free!)
We called around and found places that were okay with us taking their pallets.  The hard part is taking them apart and not cracking the boards.  We started with a hammer or two or three... TIP: don't buy cheap hammers.  Then, we moved to a sawsall.  It worked okay, but not great.  Finally, the hubs bought a circular saw and we were in business!
We separated out the keepers and made sure we had a good blend of various lengths and widths.  We took out most of the nails for safety, but left a few for character (we put those pieces up high on the wall)
Thankfully my hubs is pretty darn smart and helped me and Jess figure out the layout.  We placed each piece on the wall temporarily just to see the layout and get all the cuts out of the way.  We don't have any great tips on this step, just find someone that likes doing puzzles and invite them over to help!
(You might notice that between breaking apart the pallets and doing the wall that I moved from a blonde to brunette.  2 hair colors in one post... is that a blogger foul?
Once we had the layout, we took each piece down and labeled it so we'd know where to put it back.  We gave each row a number and a letter going from left to right... 1A, 1B, 1C, 2A, 2B etc...  Then we brought all the wood down to the garage to begin the fun part... sanding and whitewashing!
We sanded the wood lightly... we didn't want to lose cool character, but we didn't want splinters for the little man either. We arranged the wood as it would look on the wall, so that we could figure out how we wanted to whitewash the wood.
Some of the "blonde" pieces of wood needed some grey stain to make them look a bit more weathered.
To make our whitewashing colors we just filled cups with water and added a few dabs of paint.  It was trial and error.  We used the grey-blue wall paint, white paint, and some navy (which we used full strength).  We wanted cool tones, not the warm honey ones it originally had.
(Will I ever remember NOT to wear sweatpants for all our projects?)
Once it was all dry, we were so thrilled with the colors and couldn't wait to put it back on the wall!
Before putting the pallet wood on the wall, we added some industrial looking lights.  The hubby did this part of the job because we don't mess with electric- we have our limits! We replaced the wood, got busy decorating and then pretty much fell in love with the finished product!
How do you like it?

There are so many fun things in this room, and we'll be giving a play by play on each in some future posts on our blog.  We're excited to share about the fun message board made from reclaimed barnwood!

Not too shabby for a FREE statement wall eh?  My son loves his new room and Jess and my only complaint is that we didn't try this fabulous project in one of our master bedrooms! We love it!
So there you have it!  Free pallets transformed into a crazy, cool statement wall! It was free, simple, and we totally think you should try this at home!
Thanks again for all of your support! We hope you'll pop over and visit us sometime!

Ok now be honest, how many of you as you were reading this were thinking “What room should I do this to in my house?” Because I totally was!

And the fact that it was FREE – Suh-WEET!!!!

Congratulations Jess & Monica! You guys rocked it this season and earned your title!!!

Be sure to follow along with Real Housewives of BC so don’t miss out on any of their amazing projects!
